It sounds funny, but it is true: Skateboarding has its roots in surfing. In the 1950s, the surfers from California came up with the idea of "surfing the streets". They took their boards to the Californian streets and that is how skateboarding was born!

The first skateboards were primitive boards with roller skates strapped to it. In 1978, Alan Gelfand invented a maneuver, called the "Ollie Pop". In 1975 the very first skateboarding event was held at the Ocean Festival in California.

Even nowadays the ollie is the basic skateboarding trick. The skateboarder is slamming the foot on the tail end of his skateboard to lift the board and the skateboarder into the air. Tony Hawk is another famous name in skateboarding; at age 16 he became the world's best skateboarder.

Skateboarding is still changing and improving. When you watch a skateboard video today and one from 15 years ago, you will see an enormous difference. All kind of tricks are involved: Grabs, varials, grinds, flips, degrees and of course jumps.
